Is ScreenZen safe? And is it really free?

Marcel Cruz · Updated 26 October 2026

ScreenZen is free on iPhone, paid for by optional tips. What any Screen Time app can see, where ScreenZen's privacy policy lives, and who it suits.

ScreenZen is free on iPhone: its only in-app purchases are optional tips from $5.00 to $40.00, with no subscription, on the US App Store as of 14 October 2026. Like every app that locks other apps on an iPhone, it works through Apple's Screen Time permission, which you grant during setup and can withdraw in iOS Settings at any time.

Is ScreenZen free?

Yes. ScreenZen's US App Store listing, read on 14 October 2026, shows four in-app purchases, and all of them are tips: Kind Tip $5.00, Generous Tip $10.00, Amazing Tip $20.00 and Fantastic Tip $40.00. There is no subscription and no paid plan.

So paying changes nothing about what the app does for you. On the same date the listing showed 52K ratings at an average of 4.9, which means a lot of people use the tip-funded version and rate it highly.

Is ScreenZen safe to use?

On the parts anyone can check, yes. It uses the same Apple permission every iPhone app blocker uses, it publishes a privacy policy, and you can switch its access off yourself.

"Safe" has two parts here: what the app can reach on your phone, and what its maker does with data. Apple sets the first. ScreenZen's own policy covers the second.

What can a Screen Time app see?

On iPhone, an app that locks other apps works through Apple's Screen Time API, a set of frameworks called FamilyControls, DeviceActivity and ManagedSettings. The app cannot turn this on by itself: you grant the Screen Time permission when you set it up, then choose the apps to lock in Apple's own system picker, a screen drawn by iOS rather than by the app.

Apple's FamilyControls documentation describes the framework; the page answered with status 200 when we requested it on 22 October 2026. ScreenZen's features sit inside it. Its listing (read 22 October 2026) describes a wait before a distracting app opens, which can grow with each open, and a per-app goal with an optional block when you reach it, set by day and time.

Where is ScreenZen's privacy policy?

On its own site, at screenzen.co/policies/privacy-policy. The page was live on 22 October 2026, headed "Privacy policy".

What ScreenZen collects is for its maker to state, so that policy is the source to read, not a summary from another app's blog. If data handling decides the question for you, read it before you install.

How do you take the permission back?

In iOS Settings, whenever you like. The Screen Time permission belongs to you, not to the app: withdraw it and the app loses that access, and you can grant it again later if you change your mind.

Is ScreenZen worth it?

For most people who want a free blocker, yes. You pay nothing unless you choose to tip, and 52K ratings at 4.9 on the US App Store (14 October 2026) is a high rating from a lot of people. Its two main tools, a growing wait before an app opens and a daily goal that can turn into a block, cover what many people want from a blocker.

It suits you if you want friction: ScreenZen slows the open and leaves the choice with you. Our look at what Opal costs and who it suits names ScreenZen as its free pick for the same reason.

What if you want a different mechanism?

ScreenZen adds a pause and a goal. The apps below work another way. Prices are from each US App Store listing as of 14 October 2026; features and free tiers were read on 22 October 2026. Beffore is our app, so it comes last.

  • one sec: a short pause before a distracting app opens, then you choose. One app is free; one sec pro is $19.99 a year. Pick it if the pause is what you want and one app is enough.
  • Opal: a session blocker with scheduled blocks, daily app limits and timed breaks. Free to download with paid plans; the Yearly Plan is $99.99. Pick it if you want your day blocked on a calendar.
  • Jomo: blocks apps and websites for the times you set, with mindful breaks. Jomo Plus is $29.99 a year, and the yearly plan includes a 3-day free trial. Pick it if you want scheduled blocks at a lower yearly price.
  • Beffore: a to-do list that unlocks your screen time. You add today's tasks, choose the apps to lock and how much time you want each day, and finishing tasks opens that time, a slice per finished task. Pick it if you want your apps after the day's work, not instead of it.

Beffore needs a subscription after setup; the yearly plan starts with a 3-day free trial. It costs $29.99 a year in the US as of 14 October 2026, or a weekly plan with no trial. Get Beffore on the App Store.

How does Beffore handle your data?

Beffore asks for the same Screen Time permission, and there is no account. Your tasks, limits and Screen Time data stay on your iPhone. Anonymous usage stats and crash reports go to PostHog, and you can turn them off with "Share anonymous stats" in More.

The full list is on our privacy page, the loop from tasks to unlocked apps is on how Beffore works, and the Beffore support page answers why it needs Screen Time permission.
